In Norse mythology, Odin — the most powerful god in the pantheon — chose wolves not as pets but as equals. Geri and Freki sat at his feet and shared his meals, trusted above all others with his presence. In Indigenous North American traditions across dozens of nations, the wolf was a teacher, studied as a model for how to live in right relationship with your pack, your territory, your purpose. And in Roman mythology, the she-wolf — the Lupa — is the reason Rome exists at all. When the twins Romulus and Remus were abandoned and left to die, it was a wolf who found them at the foot of the Palatine Hill. The city that became the most powerful empire the Western world has ever known was built by two boys a wolf decided to keep.

Science dismantled the rest of the myth. Wild wolf packs are families — two parents and their offspring, led not by the most aggressive animal but by the most experienced. Leadership is earned through knowledge, care, and trust. The lone wolf — that romantic symbol of independence — has a significantly shorter lifespan. She is not free. She is an animal in crisis, traveling hundreds of miles to find her way back to belonging, because she understands what humans keep having to relearn: you are not stronger alone. You are just alone.

Wolf energy asks two questions, in this order: are you showing up for your pack — and are they showing up for you? She does not scatter her loyalty or perform devotion to the wrong people to avoid the discomfort of leaving. She leads through steadiness, through experience, through showing up when the hunt is hard and the night is long. When the Wolf appears, she is asking you to be honest about both sides of that equation. Belonging is not only something you find.
